Blooming of a collection of annual ornamental plants

12.08.2025 - 30.09.2025
Blooming of a collection of annual ornamental plants A collection of annual ornamental plants is blooming in the Central Botanical Garden of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus!

Here you will get acquainted with the amazing and inexhaustible world of famous and rare annual plants.

The collection includes more than 700 samples. These are varieties and species from 50 families. More than 200 species are planted on the site annually.

The geography of the plants is amazing – there are Southern Europe, South and Central America, Asia, Southern and Northern Africa, and even Australia. As a result of the introduction, the plants have adapted to the conditions of the middle zone, but they still retain their natural properties.: They love the sun, and at the beginning of growth, they also love water.

Due to the wide variety, interest in annual plants has not disappeared for many centuries, and their popularity has not faded in any kind of floral design. In terms of the variety of flower shapes, the brightness of their color, and the duration of flowering, many annuals surpass other groups of flowering plants.

Flowering of some plants begins from the end of May to the beginning of June (iberis, marigolds, snapdragons, nasturtium, calendula, cosmea) and lasts until the first frost (ageratum, verbena, mattiola). Large (amaranth, sunflower) and small (lobelia, aptenia), slender (zinnia) and spreading (annual chrysanthemum), bright (nasturtium) and delicate (asters), fragrant (tobacco, peas). The palette of bright colors is diluted with annual cereals. Green "wigwams" made of annual lianas (ipomoea, cardiospermum, kobea) are preparing for a lush and long-lasting flowering and complement the atmosphere of a bright summer.

Among the grown annuals, you can see both common and rare beautifully flowering species: Lindheimer's gaura with single-white flowers fluttering like butterflies, Mona Lavender plexanthus with bright dark green leaves with a purple tint, new varieties of Chinese aster with lush inflorescences.

In addition to beauty, many annuals also have medicinal properties (cornflower, calendula), valuable food (amaranth), repel pests and insects (marigolds, nasturtium). Their fragrance and essential oils help to disinfect the soil.
