Blooming phlox collection

Phloxes are blooming in the Central Botanical Garden of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus!

Despite their North American origin, these beautifully flowering herbaceous plants are one of the favorite and traditionally grown ornamental crops in Belarus.

The phlox collection of the Central Botanical Garden began to form almost from the moment of its foundation - since the 40s of the last century. Currently, it has 2 species and 84 varieties.

Interesting facts:

  • The name "phlox" comes from the Greek "phlox" - flame. This name was given to the plant by the famous botanist Carl Linnaeus in 1737. The irony is that there are no purely red varieties of phlox.
  • In Rus', the phlox flower was often called a flame flower or a rush flower because of its resemblance to a colorful fabric.
  • Despite the fairly popular phlox today, the golden age of this flower falls on the 1880-1940s.
  • The phlox flower carries the romance of love, means sweet dreams, and also symbolizes the unification of souls.
