Gladioli are blooming in the Central Botanical Garden of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus!

For several thousand years, we have been delighted by the gladiolus, a plant beloved by many. This flower is native to Africa, the Mediterranean, Central Europe and Asia, and Western Siberia.

The collection of gladioli in the Central Botanical Garden was founded in 1958. Currently, it has 672 varieties from three genera.

Interesting facts:

  • In the old days, about 300 years BC, gladiolus was considered a weed and annoyed people.
  • In the Middle Ages, a decoction of gladiolus flowers was used for toothache.
  • There was a time when gladiolus corms were a delicacy, they were fried or baked.
  • It was believed that gladiolus was able to protect against evil spirits and other misfortunes. Warriors used it for protection, as an amulet from death.
  • Gladiolus is considered a "male" flower. Bouquets of these flowers are traditionally presented to winners, champions, business partners.
