Lilies are blooming in the Central Botanical Garden of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.

The flower, which has gained fans due to its aesthetics and pleasant aroma, is now second only to the rose in popularity and competes with it in the number of symbolic meanings.

The collection of lilies of the Central Botanical Garden began to form in the 60s of the last century. Currently, it has 13 species and 393 varieties.

Interesting facts:

  • Lilies have been known since 1700 BC. They can even be found in Egyptian hieroglyphs, where they symbolized hope and freedom.
  • It is believed that the modern name of this flower comes from the ancient Gallic word "li-li", meaning "white-white".
  • In Persia, royal palaces were decorated with snow-white lily buds.
  • The Holy Virgin is also associated with the beauty of the white lily. According to legend, Archangel Gabriel came to the Virgin with this flower in his hands on the day of the Annunciation.
  • Each shade of lily has a special symbolism - for example, white means purity and innocence, and tiger - wealth and greatness.
  • Only white and tiger lilies are known for their rich aroma, other species have virtually no smell.
