A collection of peonies is blooming in the Central Botanical Garden of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus!

The formation of the peony collection in the Central Botanical Garden began in 1956. Today, the collection has 10 species and 326 varieties. In recent years, it has been actively replenished with both hybrids and species peonies.

Interesting facts about peonies.

  • Peonies are over 2,000 years old. The homeland of the first peonies is considered to be Asia (in particular China), Southern Europe and western North America.
  • In ancient times, people believed that peony flowers could relieve headaches and asthma attacks. In Europe, the medicinal peony has been grown since the 17th century.
  • The peony has healing properties and is highly decorative. Up until the 19th century, peonies were used exclusively as medicinal plants and a seasoning for food.
  • Peonies are famous for being long-lived flowers. A peony bush can bloom for hundreds of years.
  • Peonies are the national flower of China. In China, the peony symbolizes peace, well-being, and wealth.
  • Translated from Chinese, “peony” means “the most beautiful” and is a favorite object in Chinese art.
  • Surprisingly, pink peonies have the strongest aroma.
  • Peonies of pink and white shades are a symbol of good luck and a happy marriage. They represent love and romance and are among the most popular flowers for wedding bouquets and bridal bouquets.
