A collection of roses is blooming in the Central Botanical Garden of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus!

The collection of garden roses of the Central Botanical Garden today includes 280 varieties belonging to 17 garden groups. The most numerous are hybrid tea and floribunda.

The collection has existed since the 50s. It successfully grows varieties of breeders from Germany, France, England, the USA, Holland, Denmark, Italy, Lithuania, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and others.

The rose garden exposition includes a large number of groups and varieties related to modern roses, but special attention is paid to old garden roses, the history of which dates back to the 19th century.

Here you can enjoy the beauty and elegance of the truly French rose Cardinal Richelieu, which has a unique rich aroma and a rare purple color of flowers for roses.

Interesting facts about roses

  • It is believed that the oldest living rose in the world is 1000 years old. It grows on the wall of the Hildesheim Cathedral in Germany, and its presence has been documented since 815.
  • The most expensive rose in the world is the 2006 Juliet rose by famed rose breeder David Austin. It took a total of 15 years to breed this rose and cost $5 million.
  • There are no black roses. Roses that are called black are actually dark red.
  • Roses can grow quite tall. The tallest rose bush ever recorded is over 7 meters tall.
  • The rose is one of the three flowers mentioned in the Bible.
  • Since ancient times, the rose has been known as the ultimate symbol of love.
