The main collection of the Central Botanical Garden of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus consists of historical, classic lilacs - these are primarily varieties of foreign selection (France, Germany, Holland), as well as varieties of the CIS countries, including the Russian breeder with worldwide recognition Kolesnikov L.A. In 2011, the lilac collection of the Central Botanical Garden received international recognition. These are primarily white varieties - Lebedushka, Zashchitnikam Brest, Lunny Svet, lilac-purple - Pavlinka, Minchanka, pinkish - Zhemchuzhina, Vera Khoruzhaya, bluish - K. Zaslonov, Partizanka. Less common in botanical gardens are - Zorka Venery, Belorusskie Zori, Svityzianka, Uspekh, Khoroshye Mood, Poleskaya Legenda, Pamyati A. T. Smolskaya, Nesterka. Currently, the lilac collection of the Central Botanical Garden has more than 200 varieties. Of particular value are the varieties of its own selection. Interesting facts about lilac: The ancient Greek nymph Syringa, after whom the plant was named, was responsible for idyll and joy. Lilacs have been grown for only about 500 years, but during this time more than 2,300 varieties of different shapes, colors and aromas have appeared in culture. Lilac essential oil is more expensive than gold - the price for 1 kilogram can reach 100 thousand dollars. Some varieties of lilac survive at temperatures of -50 degrees Celsius. The Amur lilac tree can grow up to 15 meters in height. Peking lilac blooms later of all, and has a richer aroma than the common lilac. The lilac gives off its strongest aroma on a sunny and dry day.
